Graft vs. Host Disease

Well, just a little speed bump. Last week I was diagnosed with Graft vs. Host Disease (GVHD).

It is very common with bone marrow (stem cell) transplant patients. Essentially, Vicki's stem cells and my body are having a little tug-of-war: creating rashes, hard scar tissue in weird places and general fatigue.

The HemaOncologists actually want their bone marrow transplant patients to have a little GVHD because it attacks lymphoma and helps prevent a relapse.

So I have a little GVHD. Just another speed bump to perfect health!

Kara, we can't get this comment to work on your Dads blog. Will you pass it along for us? Thanks

Rich- We just found your blog through your daughters facebook. This is the BMT night shift crew: Suzy,Keeli and John. Congrats on the GVHD, it's not all bad! Lets keep that to a minimum though, we don't want to be seeing you in the near future. We have loved reading through all the amazing things you have been doing. You are one of our miracle boys. Keep up the good work! Hope to see you at the party when we open our new unit.

My immense gratitude goes out to my University of Utah BMT night shift crew: Suzy, Keeli and John. You made my stay bearable and sometimes even fun. Thanks for thinking of me. This is just a speed bump compared to what I have gone through. Hope to see you all at the open house for the new BMT unit. Say hello and thank you to everyone else there!

Rich, you don't know me but I found your blog on beingcancer.net. I think I'm on a similar path, I finished RCHOP in June and still have some cancerous activity. Thank you for creating your cancer journey. It was very helpful and inspring for me. With your permission, I want to link my blog to yours. Thanks for all that you do!
